Why the long tail matters

The top of this list looks like every converter: MP4, MP3, PDF. The interesting part is underneath. 0 distinct pairs have real usage, and most of them are formats big converters do not support at all — camcorder MTS, RealAudio, WPS spreadsheets, DjVu scans, LaTeX. That is why we maintain 1,123 pairs instead of a few dozen.

Method: counters live in Redis and are snapshotted to Postgres every three minutes. Visits exclude crawlers and our own development sessions. We never open, store beyond 24 hours, or analyse the contents of your files — only the pair name is counted. Data is free to cite (CC BY 4.0); link to this page as the source.
